Five Indie Games That Demand Your Attention

Trust me, they're that good.

This past week held a big event for gamers- the Steam Summer Sale. And boy did Steam deliver. Huge titles like Skyrim, Bioshock, Tomb Raider, and Hitman were all around five bucks. FIVE BUCKS! While these big titles were extremely exciting to see with a huge price cut, there were a slew of amazing indie games that were cut down to mere dollars in price. This is where I discovered five incredible titles that anyone on Steam needs to pick up and try out!

1. DLC Quest

DLC Quest is, as I'm sure you've guessed, a game about DLC (Downloadable Content). This game runs under the guise of a typical platformer, but in reality is an awesome comedic commentary about the video game industry. You buy DLC packs by collecting coins in the game (don't worry- there is no real money involved). Starting out, you are only able to move to the right. You have to buy DLC packs to get parts of games that we are so used to coming standard, such as being able to move left, to jump, and to have music in the game. DLC has gotten a little out of control in terms of how much money consumers have to spend, so it's great to see a game that can poke fun at that.

2. Gone Home

Let me just start out by saying that this game is incredible. You play as a girl coming home from college, who ends up discovering that her whole family is gone. You are alone in the house, and have to search for clues as to what happened while you were away studying abroad. This game is brilliant in how exploration of this house teaches you so much about the family. Every tiny item that you pick up pieces the story together more and more. It is a great snapshot into the life of this family, and realistically captures the human experience. Once you start, you're hooked, the game is completely enthralling. The game also has a horror vibe to it in the tension you feel walking through the dark, gigantic house and learning about all the house's secrets. This one is a must have.

3. Guacamelee! Gold Edition

Guacamelee! is such a fun and unique game! It is a mix of brilliant platforming and fighting with beautiful art style and visuals. The game is modeled around the day of the dead, and you play as a luchadore. The game design is stunning with the colors used and the animation style. The platforming aspects are genuinely difficult as well, which makes a great challenge! What is also unique in the platforming is that you switch from the land of the dead to the real world. The fighting combo system is great as well. Guacamelee! is a beautiful gaming world to step into, and a treasure to play.

4. Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Octodad is pure fun. You play an octopus that has fallen in love with a human and raised a family, and have to keep them, and everyone else, from noticing your disguise. If you try to question the logic of this game, just don't. There is none. The true reason that this game is one that everyone must try once, is in it's mechanics. It's not easy to go from being an eight-armed octopus to being a man with two arms and two legs, and the game never let's you forget that. You have to control each limb separately, and even the most simple of tasks become impossible. IMPOSSIBLE!!!! Anyway, I think you get the point. Although this game is hard, it's a laugh riot. It's so much fun to even just watch your friends try and play it for the first time. And laugh at them! Yay Octodad!

5. VVVVVV

VVVVVV is a perfect demonstration of how gameplay is infinitely more important than having advanced graphics. This is a hardcore platformer, and I mean it when I say hardcore. Out of the 1 hour and 50 minutes I have played this game, I have died 725 times. But I've loved every single minute of it. This platformer is great in that it's a throwback to old school platformers, but with a new mechanic. This game has replaced the jump button with one that switches your gravity. Although this game is pretty damn hard, it's extremely rewarding. Playing as the captain, you have to recover the other five crew members from your ship. So you explore the vast map to find them. When you get close to finding them, the platforming gets more and more difficult, creating a great challenge. After the many deaths that you will face, finally reaching the crew member feels like you have won a gold medal. This game perfectly combines exploration and platforming, and I am completely addicted.

Edge of Spider-Verse

Every Spider-Man... EVER.

Marvel has officially announced a new five-issue comic series called "Edge of Spider-Verse". It is about multiple parallel realities in the Spider-Man world. This even includes a world where Gwen Stacy is Spider-man! (Or in this case...-Woman).

There will be several different artists and writers working on this series, including My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way! MCR and Spider-Man fans, rejoice! If some of you didn't know, Gerard Way actually has a comic background. He first studied to be a comic artist before starting up MCR, and he also created the award winning Umbrella Academy series.

I can't believe we will have to wait until November to read this!!!

Which Spider-Man is your favorite? And how do you feel about Gwen taking on the Spider-role? Let me know in the comments!

My Favorite PS2 Games

The Top Ten Games that Defined My Childhood

Sony's Playstation 2 was a turning point for me as a gamer. It was my first real console. I received it for Christmas as a gift from my parents when I was 7 in 2001. This would mark the start of my formative years of gaming, some amazing years with amazing memories! Let's take a trip down memory lane, as I share with you my top ten PS2 games of my childhood:

10. Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
I've always loved Spongebob Squarepants, and the first four seasons of the show were a HUGE part of my childhood (and the many references that so many people in my generation share from this show). What was even more awesome, especially as a kid, was to be able to actually step into the world of Bikini Bottom! I loved this game for so many reasons, from the hysterical dialogue between the characters, to the ridiculous missions that had me laughing the whole time. What other game can you bungie jump as Spongebob by the waistband of his underwear, or snowboard down Sand Mountain with his tongue? This game stayed true to the essence of the show and it's characters, and was a necessary experience for any Spongebob fan to take.

9. Pac-Man World 2
I have put so many hours into this game. Albeit many frustrating ones, there were some great memories. This was such a great representation of the classic Pac Man games in three dimensional form, that it was a blast to play. From butt bouncing, to flying through the air chomping on a pac-dot chain, to defeating the ghost bosses, you were guaranteed a fresh take on the gaming classic. This game, while adorable and extremely easy in the first levels, actually grows to be difficult! It's unique qualities and increasing difficulty is what grants Pac Man World 2 a spot on this list.

8. Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life Special Edition
I also put a lot of time into this game, but half of it was spent on loading screens! Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life is in fact what it advertises in the title, a wonderful life to virtually live! I never knew that a game about farming could actually be enthralling until I played this. Farming itself was fun, but the real fun came in the relationships with others in the game. Wooing the possible bachelorettes in the game was so much fun, which is what has made Harvest Moon such a popular franchise as it is today. What was also fun were the subplots within the game, such a the sprites you discover while exploring your town. Adventure, dating, and farming- It's what makes up a truly wonderful virtual life.

7. Sonic Heroes
This is still my favorite sonic game (and I'm referring to the three dimensional installments in the series, not the classic side-scrollers). Sonic heroes combined really clever level designs, with the fun of being able to control multiple teams of characters from the sonic world. It was a very unique and extremely fun sonic experience that everyone should try out.

6. Spider-Man 2
If you ask any Spider-Man fan what game was their favorite- this will always be the answer (And we all know that I'm a huge Spider-Man fan). There was some magic in this game that still makes it reign supreme over so many installments, for so many fans. An open world new york, combined with great and rememberable boss battles, as well as a story line that well represents the movie is the recipe for a great Spider-Man game. Not to mention that web-swinging around New York really never gets old. Surprised this isn't my number one pick?

5. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
This game...This game. So many great memories. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and out of all the games in the franchise that I have played, this is the best. And I have actually replayed this game fully over ten times. Although Harry and his friends have a very cartoonish representation in this installment, you get over it fast. You get the complete Hogwarts experience in this game, from hanging out in the Burrow, to buying your books and supplies in Hogsmead, to being in class, defeating Voldemort, and winning the house cup, this is a journey that any Harry Potter fan needs to take. Every aspect of the Harry Potter universe that we know and love is represented! The best part though? Being able to fly your Nimbus 2000 all throughout the grounds of Hogwarts, whenever you want. It's bloody brilliant.

4. Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex
I had previously played installments of the Crash Bandicoot series on the first Playstation prior to getting this game, but this was my favorite. Cortex is back, and ready to lead you to your demise. What makes this game my favorite installment of the series are the unique levels that mix up the classic level styles. One in particular that was my favorite was the level when you get to roll around in a giant hamster ball on a bamboo track. The design of the game was also great, with 5 warp rooms with 5 levels and a boss in each. That makes 25 exciting, and sometimes controller-throwing levels to explore and love (or get frustrated with). Some of the bosses are difficult, and I'm talking early on in the game!

3. Kingdom Hearts 2
This is an obvious pick for any PS2 owner. Kingdom Hearts was the dream gaming franchise- an RPG with awesome original characters mixed with all of your favorite Disney and Final Fantasy characters. This game is near and dear to my heart, and my first really serious title in my gaming history. My favorite part about the game was the backstory with Roxas that you play in the beginning, it gave the game great depth to the storyline and characters. Not to mention how cool it was to see all of the characters grown up!

2. Tony Hawk's Underground
I have replayed this so many times I actually don't even have a number. I had (and still have) a weakness for skating games. This is also in my opinion one of the best of the best. I loved the Tony Hawk games, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 being my previous favorite. Underground had a great storyline, and made it so much fun to try to go pro. This would be my favorite game of all time, if not for one more that stole my heart...

1. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
This is the best game, with the fondest memories. When I did my interview for GameStop, and was asked what my favorite game of all time was, I said THAM. And why? Four words: Open world Los Angeles. This was the first time in the series that loading screens were eliminated, by having you take a bus, and to go to other cities skating through alleyways and shopping mall hallways. You could skate Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills one minute, and then skate through the Santa Monica Pier. The storyline was really fun, with great original characters, and fun character customization. This is my favorite game of all time, and will always hold a big place in my heart. Not to mention the kick-ass soundtrack!

What were your favorite PS2 games? Let me know in the comments!

Lot of 50 Spider-Man Comics!

A Web-Slinging Good Time

Today I finally got the package I was patiently waiting two weeks for! (I'd like to think I was patient, anyway). A seller on Ebay called Porky's Comics was offering a great deal- a lot of 50 random Spider-Man comics for a little over $30! Porky's Comics is a top-rated plus seller, with great credibility. The package arrived in good shape, with thought put into packaging the comics to make sure they would survive their journey! The store is constantly offering this deal with other comic characters' series (Batman and Superman for example) along with Spider-Man.

So many Spider-Man activities- Just a portion of the 50-comic package.

What was so fun about ordering this package was the fact that it is a random lot. The comics were any Spider-Man related comic, which gave me comics from multiple different series. The fact that I had no idea what I would get made opening the package such a thrill! I got multiple issues from these series: The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, The Web of Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-man, Spider-Man, Spider-Man and the Black Cat, Marvel Tales Starring Spider-Man, Spider-Man Adventures, Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man, Spider-Man Unlimited, Marvel Team-Up, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Spider-Man's Tangled Web, and a spin off comic, The Prowler. (Phew! That was a keyboard full!) Minus coming across a few that I already had, the variety totally made up for it, especially one thing that I found...

Just like my find at House of Secrets in my previous post, I came across an awesome collectable gem.  In Spider-Man issue 46, not only is it a shiny, silver cover, it also contained a surprise inside!

Gotta love the cheesy promotional pamphlet it came in...

....There is a promotional animation cell for the Spider-Man cartoon series!!!

So, if you're looking to get started on a comic book collection, this deal is one not to pass up!

Happy comic hunting!

X-Men Blu-ray Collection!

An X-cellent Deal!

On Friday I stopped into my local Best Buy and found a deal that is essential for any X-Men fan! Surprise- I'm not just a Spider-Man fan! For only $19.99 you can get the X-Men Experience Collection, a four disc collection that includes X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and the most recent installment in the series, X-Men: First Class.

In addition to the movies, the collection comes with a set of character cards, as well as $8 toward seeing X-Men: Days of Future Past which comes out on May 23rd.

This is all part of a series of deals to get people excited about the new film, which the retailer is also doing with the Spider-Man movies. All of the Spider-Man movies come with movie money to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which is currently in theaters (and excellent! I will be posting a review on it very soon). All of the X-Men movies also have the movie money included.

What was your favorite X-Men movie? (I loved First Class!) Let me know in the comments!

Halo 5 Announced!

Halo 5: Guardians

Halo fans, the wait is finally over. Our beloved series is finally coming back in fall of 2015! I would be even more thrilled, except that it will only come out on Xbox One.

The title of the game will be Halo 5: Guardians. We were first introduced to the idea of another Halo game in the franchise during last year's E3 convention in a teaser trailer, shown below.

Was anyone else curious why Master Chief would need to wear a robe when he's in hi-tech armor?

In addition to the new title, and the new platform, there will be a lot of performance changes in this installment. The game will be bigger in scope, as well as running on a new, more powerful engine. It will also run at 60 fps (frames per second). This is truly going to be a next-gen experience.

On June 9th, at this year's E3 convention, more details will be addressed at the Xbox Media Briefing, so stay tuned!

This announcement is riding on the heels of another major announcement for Microsoft- An Xbox One without the Kinect included. This also brought the price down to that of the Playstation 4, at $399. Coincidence? I think not.

What was your favorite Halo game? Let me know in the comments! (Mine is still Halo 3.)
